If two books can sit side by side on it, yes. The 2mm plate slides into the gap between any two books, hardback or paperback, on shelves 6 to 14 inches deep. No lip, bracket or wall contact needed.
No. The plate is powder-coated and deburred at every edge, and rests against the boards rather than the pages.
Three AAA batteries, which are not included. There is no cable to run down the bookcase.
